Road Trip with a Gun

Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. I'd like to bring my firearm along, but going through New York State complicates things a bit. Avoiding NY would add a ridiculous amount of drive time, so I'm weighing my options. It's a tough call, and I wonder if anyone else has dealt with this situation before. What did you end up doing? Any advice or experiences would be helpful.
