Competition gear seems crazy expensive

I looked into what I'd need to get started in USPSA or IDPA, can you start with basic gear or do you really need all to compete?

You definitely don’t need much to start shooting competitions. A working gun, a holster, magazines, and ammo will get you started.

  You can totally start simple and still have a blast. I've seen plenty of people out there running really basic setups and learning a ton without having to drop a fortune.

You can absolutely start basic, most people do. Gun, safe holster, belt and a couple mags gets you on the line just fine. The fancy gear comes later not before the first beep.
